The Communist Party of China opened its 20th National Congress at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing, Oct 16, 2022. The Congress, which embodied the will of the whole Party and carried the expectations of the whole nation, was of far-reaching significance and drew widespread attention. Teachers from various departments at SFL lauded China’s achievements over the past decade and discussed the significance of the National Congress. Combining with their work, they talked about what they thought and felt, expressing their heartfelt love for the country.

The convening of the Party’s 20th National Congress drew world-wide attention. General Secretary Xi Jinping’s report was over-arching and inspiring. It comprehensively reviewed the historic achievement of the Party and the country in the new era, urged party members to hold high the great banner of socialism with Chinese characteristics, fully implement the thought on Socialism with Chinese characteristics for a New Era, carry forward the great founding spirit of the Party, and strive in unity to build a modern socialist country in all respects and advance the great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation on all fronts.

Listening to the report of the 20th CPC National Congress was exhilarating and encouraging. In the report, General Secretary Xi pointed out that education, science and technology, and human resources are the foundational and strategic pillars for building a modern socialist country in all respects and emphasized the importance of continuing to give high priority to the development of education, build China’s self-reliance and strength in science and technology, and rely on talent to pioneer and to propel development.

 

As for SFL’s development, we will seize the important strategic opportunity of high-quality development of higher education. Based on the new stage of development, we will implement new development concepts and build a new development pattern, keep focusing on national strategy and social demand, continue to improve SFL’s disciplinary innovation system, and uphold innovative spirit as SFL’s new spiritual outlook in the new era. As political workers in universities, we should be guided by Xi Jiping’s Thought on Socialism with Chinese Characteristics for a New Era, fully understand and implement the spirit of the 20th National Congress report, uphold and strengthen the Party’s overall leadership of education, fully implement the Party’s educational policy. Listening to and studying General Secretary Xi’s report is quite inspiring and encouraging. General Secretary Xi emphasized that education, science and technology, and human resources are the foundational and strategic pillars for building a modern socialist country in all respects. We must regard science and technology as our primary productive force, talent as our primary resource, and innovation as our primary driver of growth. We will fully implement the strategy for invigorating China through science and education, the workforce development strategy, and the innovation-driven development strategy. We will open up new areas and new arenas in development and steadily foster new growth drivers and new strengths.

 

We will continue to promote the system reform of innovative talent training, uphold the principle of talent cultivation for the Party and the country, for the goal of producing talents of foreign languages equipped with strong cultural confidence, firm Chinese stance and excellent skills to tell Chinese stories well. During the process, we should further enhance students’ ability to engage in international communication, so that they can take the lead in shouldering the heavy responsibility of promoting cultural exchange, so that Chinese stories can be told, heard and understood clearly, and can then be spread far and wide.

The Congress report not only summarized the extraordinary journey China has taken since the new era, but also pointed out the new direction for the country’s future development. The report shows that Party’s Central Committee attaches great importance to invigorating the country through science and education, and has given high and unprecedented priority to workforce development.

 

As a teacher of higher education, our job responsibility is to cultivate talents for the country. As for such key questions as how to cultivate talents, what talents to cultivate and for whom to cultivate, we should have a goal in our mind and a path under our feet, and keep thinking and dare to innovate. As for translation talents cultivation, we face the transition from “translating the world” to “translating China”, which calls for innovation and reconstruction in the goal of talents cultivation, the teacher training, and the curriculum, so as to better serve the important national strategy of international communication.

General Secretary Xi’s report is comprehensive, overarching and inspiring. As a researcher and a college teacher, I was particularly touched by the emphasis that Xi’s report lays on invigorating China through science and technology and accelerating the development of high quality education system. In the report, Xi reiterated the importance of “talent cultivation for the Party and the country”, and teachers’ responsibility, honor and happiness of “attracting the brightest minds from all over and cultivating them.”

 

Xi also pointed out that all the science researchers should position themselves upon the Chinese soil, be based on the needs of the country and the society, accelerate independent science research innovation, make contribution to the great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation. In the future work, we will bear in mind Xi’s expectations, write our research paper upon the soil of our motherland with practical actions, and develop education that meets the people’s expectation.

General Secretary Xi Jinping pointed out in his report that we should continue to give high priority to the development of education, build China’s self-reliance and strength in science and technology, and rely on talent to pioneer and to propel development. The report also mentioned that we will continue efforts to cultivate talent for the Party and the country and comprehensively improve our ability to nurture talent at home. All this will see us producing first-class innovators and attracting the brightest minds from all over.

 

Shanghai Jiao Tong University’s development has always aimed at cultivating innovative leaders. In terms of college education, our key tasks in the future will be to improve the overall English proficiency of SJTU students, upgrade the international communication ability and broaden the international vision of SFL students, blaze a trail of advanced English talents cultivation with Chinese features.

On the morning of Oct 16th in 2022, I listened to General Secretary Xi Jinping’s report at the opening session of the 20th CPC National Congress. In the report, Xi mentioned that “This country is its people; the people are the country. As the Communist Party of China has led the people in fighting to establish and develop the People’s Republic, it has really been fighting for their support.”  “We must keep to our path and not sway in our commitment. We must not return to the isolation and rigidity of the past, or veer off course by changing our nature or abandoning our system. We must develop our country and our nation with our own strength, and we must maintain a firm grasp on the future of China’s development and progress.”

 

These powerful words have been etched into my mind. What a responsible and glorious party CPC is, who treasures people’s heart and regard the country and nation’s development as the starting point. Xi also mentioned in the report that “Just as there are no bounds to practice, there is no end to theoretical innovation.” This is the sounding bugle, motivating us to march forward on the unending journey of scientific research.

General Secretary Xi Jinping tells us that “This country is its people; the people are the country”, which vividly and concretely reveals the nature of our socialist country and people-centeredness that it demonstrates. Only the people are the true embodiment and guardian of a state. Without rallying the people, the state can become water without source, wood without root, prone to collapsing like loose sand.

 

CPC never let go the spirit of self-reform, and always gives top priority to people’s benefits, shares weal and woe with the people, and always maintains a close bond with the people. As college teachers, we are obligated to carefully comprehend each and every sentence from the report, so that we can find answers to many key questions, can stand firm, and can accomplish the work of teaching better.

In response to the sudden outbreak of Covid-19, the Party put the people and their lives above all else and took drastic measures, which not only claims responsibility for Chinese people’s health, but also makes great contribution to the world public health security, spreading Chinese wisdom and Chinese solutions, presenting the image of a responsible great power to the world.
